Spatial organisation problem solving activities feature regularly within our Kindergarten mathematics program. This type of problem solving is not only an important foundation within mathematics, but is a crucial component in developing thinking skills across curriculum areas. Students use blocks and challenge cards, lego, a variety of different types of puzzles and have even begun coding by using commands and sequences to make their way from point to point (physically, on paper and soon, the ipads).
One of our morning rotations during our literacy session includes a fine motor activity. These activities help strengthen muscles and help the children develop and refine small motor movements, along with problem solving at the same time - they are super fun and can be challenging too! The children also explore a range of sensory activities which naturally encourage them to use scientific processes while they create, investigate, play and explore.
As part of our sun safety unit the students compared hats in our 'Hat Parade'. Two thumbs up indicated very sun safe a thumb down suggested the hat wasn't very sun safe at all! Following this session the students designed their own sun safe hat and then had a go at making a hat during our STEM session. On Friday the 28th of February, Kindergarten students joined in with many others throughout Australia to make a difference, one step at a time. We collected rubbish from the Kindergarten play area and many of the school garden areas. The children were particularly amazing at spotting small pieces of plastic and took joy from knowing that they were helping our local animals and birds by picking them up. Well done Kindy! Congratulations to our first Kindergarten award winners for the year: Reuben, Sofia, Jesse and Arabella.
